Critical properties of fluid membranes with hexatic order

چکیده
2014 The long distance behaviour of a model of fluid membranes with orientational (hexatic) order and small surface tension is investigated. It is shown that, if orientational defects (disclinations) are neglected, the hexatic stiffness KA is not renormalized by thermal fluctuations. The renormalization flow of the rigidity modulus 03BA goes, at large KA, to a nontrivial infrared stable fixed point. In this situation, hexatic membranes with vanishing effective surface tension are smooth critical objects with a finite fractal dimension dF > 2 and a spreading dimension ds 2 which depend continuously on KA, in contrast with the case of fluid membranes. Fluctuations in membranes with crystalline and hexatic order
2014 We study the interplay between crystalline (or hexatic) order and thermal fluctuations in membranes with vanishing surface tension. If the connectivity of the crystalline state is preserved, the membrane remains uncrumpled at low temperatures. When dislocations are allowed, however, screening of elastic stresses by buckling reduces dislocation energies, and promotes dislocation unbinding. ...
متن کاملRenormalization of Fluctuating Tilted-Hexatic Membranes
We consider the tilted-hexatic Hamiltonian on the fluctuating membranes. A renormalization-group analysis leads us to find three critical regions; two correspond to the strong coupling regimes of the gradient cross coupling where we find the (anti-)locked tilted-hexatic to liquid phase transition, the other to the weak coupling regime where we find four phases; the unlocked tiltedhexatic phase,...
متن کاملLocomotion and transport in a hexatic liquid crystal.
The swimming behavior of bacteria and other microorganisms is sensitive to the physical properties of the fluid in which they swim. Mucus, biofilms, and artificial liquid-crystalline solutions are all examples of fluids with some degree of anisotropy that are also commonly encountered by bacteria. In this article, we study how liquid-crystalline order affects the swimming behavior of a model sw...
متن کاملFluctuating Membranes With Tilt Order
Thermal fluctuations are important for amphiphihc bilayer membranes since typical bending stif Inesses can be a few kBT The rod-like constituent molecules are generically tilted with respect to the local normal for packing reasons We study the effects of fluctuations on membranes with nematic order, a simplified idealization with the same novel features as realistic tilt order We find that nema...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional melting under quenched disorder.
We study the influence of quenched disorder on the two-dimensional melting behavior of superparamagnetic colloidal particles, using both video microscopy and computer simulations of repulsive parallel dipoles. Quenched disorder is introduced by pinning a fraction of the particles to an underlying substrate. We confirm the occurrence of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young scenario and ...
